Homelessness has many faces:
· the hidden face of a hungry infant cradled in her mother’s arms;
· the drawn face of the classmate in your child’s school who slept in the family car last night;
· the frightened face of the runaway teenager living on the street;
· the battle-scarred face of the veteran whose emotional wounds have walled him off from the society he sacrificed to protect;
· the battered face of the young woman who has finally found the courage to escape an abusive relationship;
· the faces of the many hundreds of families who receive eviction notices each month in Palm Beach County, victims of catastrophic illnesses, lost jobs, failed businesses, and other unexpected financial disasters.
All those faces of homelessness and many more are not any different from the faces you see next door in your own neighborhood, not so different from the faces across your own breakfast table, and even not so different from the face you see in the mirror.
During 30 years of service, there are very few faces of homelessness that The Lord’s Place has not seen. We have learned that emergency shelters and soup kitchens are incapable of addressing the root causes of homelessness. We know that no one template solves every homelessness problem. However, we also know that there are effective long-term solutions. But those solutions are beyond our reach without your help.
At our annual Ending Homelessness Breakfast in November, we unveiled a new program: The 2% Solution. The concept is very simple—if just 2% of our community will commit to addressing the problem of homelessness, this critical social problem can and will be solved.
As a friend, I ask that you join me in committing $1 a day, $30 a month, to ending homelessness in Palm Beach County. The strength of your contribution, combined with the commitment of just 2% of your friends and neighbors has the power to end homelessness now. A future in which the right to basic shelter is available to every man, woman, and child in Palm Beach County is within reach—with your help.
